MANAGING THE RIVER MOUTH NOW
While the groyne investigation continues, the Wairoa River mouth is being actively managed now by Hawke’s Bay Regional Council under an Operational Management Plan, developed in partnership with Tātau Tātau o Te Wairoa.
Practical measures already in place include weekly joint inspections of the mouth by Regional Council and Tātau Tātau representatives, cameras providing 24/7 visibility, agreed management options for when the mouth closes during low flow, and an emergency procedure so a local decision can be made about opening the mouth if communications are disrupted.
